Horace Lee Lewis

–

Bridgeport, Connecticut

Horace Lee Lewis, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and hero, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2021, at the age of 62 while at Midstate HHC Hospital in Meriden, CT. He was born in Clarkton, NC on March 24, 1959 to the beloved Mother Elizabeth Lewis and Father Milton Lewis (predeceased).

He loved his family, his sweet wife of 35 years Bonnie Lewis, his amazing children, Jessica Chatman(Isaac), Horace Lewis Jr., and grandchildren Santos and Sariya Salicrup and Josiha Webb; his adored sisters, Rose Rawlings, Wanda Drayton, Sylvia Santiago and Valerie Smith; his dearest brothers, Curtis and Larry Lewis; a treasured mother-in-law Velma Clarke; sisters-in-law, Maxine Streator, Carol Goforth, Frances Ferguson Harriett Lewis, and Lois Lewis; brothers-in law, Charles Drayton, Joey Santiago and Tommy Smith and Rufus Rodgers; precious nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and his Westport students, family, and co-workers.

Throughout his career for the town of Westport Board of Education for over 30 years, Horace was the head custodian. His humble beginnings were bigger than life, he was a leader, director and server who did his job with kindness. He had a big smile, a big heart and drove a BIG TRUCK. . . those who knew him well, knew he loved advising and directing in a big way with a smile and a good heart. He had a charming attitude about his role as the head custodian. He was warranted as a genuine man, who could be relied on for giving it his all with a passion to promote a successful outcome.

All who knew and got to know Horace have seen just how understanding, kind, wise and charming he was. He was a genuine man with tremendous substance who enjoyed his life. Horace moved to Connecticut in 1964 with his parents and siblings. He attended Waterville School, Maplewood School and Bassick High School. He was the middle child in the family who liked to be outside.

Horace loved fishing at the reservoir, barbecuing in the back yard with family and friends, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers - a fan favorite, and decorating his Chevy Silverado Truck. After retiring, his new hobbies were carpentry - and out of this came building items for his daughters business, riding his electric bike, joking around with his wife and grandchildren (who kept him youthful), lastly, his daily early morning conversations with his son Horace Jr. which was very special to him.

Over the years, his kind heart is what let everyone know that he was a hero who wanted to help for a positive outcome. He was dedicated to his family, friends and jobs. He wore a big hat with style and charm. Horace loved his life and what he accomplished throughout his life. He was content in knowing whatever he did with care was effective for the betterment of a situation. He made an impact in the lives of many people.
