In Loving Memory of George Keene

George Keene, affectionately known as "Pops," "Grandpa," "Uncle George," "Big Poppa," and "Mr. Keene," peacefully entered eternal rest at his home on July 9, 2026, at the age of 89.

George was born on April 19, 1937, in Chase City, Virginia, to the late James Keene and Matilda Keene. He was one of eight children and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lily Mae Brown Keene; his parents, James and Matilda Keene; his brothers, Raymond Keene, Irvin Keene, Rev. Lee Keene, and James Keene Jr.; his sisters, Fannie Hargrove and Mamie Collins; and his brother-in-law, John Hargrove. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving sister, Viola Hargrove of Stratford, Connecticut.

In 1957, George relocated to Connecticut to join his sister, Viola, and brother-in-law, John Hargrove. It was there that he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Lily Mae Brown. Together they built a beautiful life and family. George also lovingly relocated his parents and two younger siblings to Connecticut, demonstrating his deep commitment to family.

George was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Stratford, where he faithfully served on the Usher Board Ministry during his early years. He worked as a truck driver for McLean Trucking Company before retiring from the Town of Stratford Department of Public Works and the Baldwin Center of Stratford.

George leaves to cherish his loving memory his children: Terry Brown (Donzie) of Stratford, Connecticut; Sophia "Mimi" Lee Purvis (Equavian) of Maryland; and Raymond Keene (Jody) of Stratford, Connecticut. He was a proud grandfather to Travis Kollack, Kenyon Brown, Terry (Mamie) Kollack, Michelle Lee, Mykel Lee, Anthony Keene, TyShaun Keene, Raymond Keene Jr., and Jade Keene. He was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

George never met a stranger. He was a true people person who loved being surrounded by family and friends. Whether he was telling stories, making people laugh, or bringing everyone together, he was truly the life of the party. His warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit touched countless lives. Above all else, George loved his family, and he lived a full and meaningful life centered on faith, love, and togetherness.

Though his presence will be deeply missed, his legacy of love, laughter, kindness, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
