Ernestine Coleman

Ernestine Coleman age 85 entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 peacefully at her home in Stamford.

Ernestine Coleman was born May 6, 1935 in Weldon, North Carolina. She was the firstborn of the late Virginia Moss Coleman and James Coleman.

Ernestine was a faithful member of Greater Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church for over 45 years. She served as a member of the Greater Faith Church Choir, the Womens Friendship Club and the Floral Committee.

Ernestine retired from the Stamford School system in 2001 as Head Custodian at Cloonan Junior High. She holds the distinct honor of being the first black female custodian in the City of Stamford. After her retirement, with a desire to remain active, she became a crossing guard; she could be seen on West Main Street standing or "sitting" at her post with her STOP sign. She was also a member of the Phyllis Wheatley Temple #179 I.B.P.O.E. of the W., Stamford, CT.

She had a green thumb and loved to see things grow. She loved to putt around in her own garden as well as the community garden located down the street from her home. Ernestine was a great cook and baker. One of her specialties was her famous brownies with fresh pecans.

She loved playing spades, pinochle, bid whist, pokeno, bingo and doing puzzles. She loved to go fishing, even though she didnt get to do it as often as she would have liked.

Ernestine leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted and loving son, Michael K. Coleman and his companion, Teaetta Desuzia, granddaughter, LaTonya M. Phillips; great-granddaughter, Janay Coplon; sister, Robin D. Coleman-Cannon; niece, Alison M. Coleman, nephew, Rasheem D. Coleman and a host of family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Margaret A. Coleman and aunt, Emma Lee Squire.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 1, 2021 at 11:00 AM, Baker Funeral Services, 84 South Main Street, Norwalk, CT. Family will receive guest from 10:00 AM until time of service at the chapel. Interment will take place at Woodland Cemetery, 66 Woodland Place, Stamford, CT.
