Charles "Peanut" McCrae, a beloved son, father, brother, cousin, and friend, entered this world on September 14, 1988, in Norwalk, Connecticut, and departed far too soon on September 26, 2026, at his home in Bloomfield, Connecticut.
Charles grew up in Norwalk, where he was lovingly raised by his parents, the late Alberta B. McCarroll and Charles L. McCrae. He attended Tracey Magnet School and Nathan Hale Middle School before graduating from Brien McMahon High School. From an early age, Charles had a presence that was impossible to ignore. His infectious smile, quick wit, and larger-than-life personality drew people to him wherever he went. Whether he had known you for years or had just met you, Charles had a way of making everyone feel welcome.
After high school, Charles built a successful career in the armed guard industry before proudly accepting a position as a Correctional Officer with the Connecticut Department of Correction. He took great pride in his work and carried out his responsibilities with dedication, professionalism, and integrity. More than anything, he valued the relationships he built with his colleagues along the way and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.
Known affectionately as "Peanut”, Charles loved sports, especially football and basketball, and never passed up the chance to enjoy a great meal surrounded by family and friends. In fact, Peanut was such an enthusiastic eater that our family often referred to him as a "professional eater" during gatherings. He was also a self-appointed restaurant critic and a pretty good cook. He always knew the best places to eat and exactly what should be ordered. Charles was the kind of person who brought energy and laughter wherever he went. Whether at a family gathering, celebrating with friends, or simply spending time with those he loved, he had a way of making every moment memorable.
Of all the titles he held throughout his life, the one he cherished most was being a father. Charles's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was his daughter, Zanovia, his beloved "Princess." She was the center of his world, and the love he had for her knew no bonds. Everything he did was driven by his desire to provide for her, protect her, and make her proud.
Charles was preceded in death by his mother, Alberta B. McCarroll; his grandmothers, Thelma V. McCrae and Ida M. Fowlkes; and several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He leaves to cherish his memory his father, Charles L. McCrae; his grandfather, Charles E. McCrae; his treasured daughter, Zanovia Brettschneider-McCrae; his loving sister, Katina F. Williams; two nephews, Richardo Williams and Deveron Williams; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were forever touched by his love, friendship, and unforgettable spirit.
Though his time with us was far too short, Charles leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, strength, and kindness. His smile, his stories, and the countless memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the blessing of having known him and the joy he brought into our lives.
Rest peacefully, Peanut. You will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. ❤️
